UWCSEA is seeking Primary School Teaching Assistants who can work in our East campus as relief covers. The selected candidates will need to be available at short notice* during busy periods to cover staff absences and long term covers such as maternity.

Reporting to the Primary School Leadership Team, the teaching assistant (TA) will assist in the delivery of the learning programme within the classroom environment and other settings as directed by the teacher and/or Head of Grade / Department.

They will support across the Primary School, in class, where needed, to cover absence.

Main Responsibilities

Pre-lesson Support

  • Support students during break times as well as arrival and departure as required.
  • Assist in planning, preparation and the use of specialist materials, strategies, and resources.

During Lesson Support

  • Engage in all aspects of student learning and curriculum, including programme delivery, goal setting and assessment.
  • Positively and proactively deliver targeted support to students with diverse learning profiles within the classroom environment and other school settings.
  • Work with the students individually or in a small group setting; supervising activities assigned by the teacher.
  • Support and fully engage in all 5 elements of the UWCSEA programme, including activities, service and outdoor education including full participation in residential camps.

Documentation

  • Monitor and record student progress, wellbeing and behaviour in an effort to better meet students’ needs and goals.
  • Observe students and take anecdotal notes to inform planning of appropriate interventions, and next steps.
  • Participate in professional conversations to share above documentation.

  • Build positive, productive relationships with the students to support their engagement and learning, including building opportunities to draw on student interests and strengths within the learning programme.
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion, demonstrating a willingness to adapt and develop pedagogy to meet the needs of our learners.

  • Maintain confidentiality at all times in respect of individual/family circumstances.
  • Abide by the school’s policies and practices, including the professional code of conduct.
  • Demonstrate professionalism in all interactions within the school setting and on school business.
  • Engage in, and complete all required safeguarding training and use relevant College systems.
  • Use initiative to take on additional responsibilities as and when required.
  • Assist with any other duties, tasks or jobs with similar levels of responsibility and complexity to the assigned job grade as may be reasonably requested by the line manager and/or the College

Person Specifications

Essential

  • Experience in school settings essential: at least 2 ye ars of relevant experience in similar capacity with children ag e d 4 - 11 ye ars o ld
  • A willingness to learn and a commitment to ongoing professional learning are essential to keep up to date and continue to improve own practice
  • Proficient with technology is essential, including Google platforms, Gmail and Google calendar and a working knowledge of Mac
  • Must be passionate about working with children ag ed 4 - 11 to positively impact their learning, demonstrating a caring and supportive approach
  • Excellent English (written and spoken) communication and interpersonal skills
  • Able to work cohesively in a team based environment as well as independently
  • Must be flexible, willing and able to adapt and change at short notice in response to student and school needs
  • Physically fit and able to work with students including working on the floor with students, kneeling, supervising student up and down the stairs, outdoor duties, and accompanying students on outdoor activities, including off campus

Desirable

  • Qualification in relevant fields of study is highly desirable
  • Experience working with students with additional needs would be advantageous
