About the Role

Britannia has an excellent opportunity for an individual who will be responsible for handling P&I liability claims against members by providing assistance and advice to members of the Club in relation to their claims. We are looking for someone who is genuinely passionate about maritime insurance with personal injury or medical claims handling experience, preferably gained from within a P&I Club, lawyers, ship owners or ships agents.

Your Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include the following:

  • Crew Claims – Handle claims from inception, including liaising with Members and correspondents to ensure appropriate care and medical and other costs are minimised.
  • Crew Claims – Keep up to date with respective legal regimes in place in respect of the employment of crew in countries such as, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Korea, the USA and the UK.
  • Third Party Claims – Handle claims from inception, including liaising with Members and correspondents to ensure that the Member’s exposure to third party litigation is minimised.
  • Stowaways – Handle stowaway cases including identifying the stowaway, obtaining travel documents and arranging the prompt disembarkation of stowaways at the earliest opportunity, in order to avoid delays to the ship.
  • In the event of legal proceedings being commenced, you will be responsible for supervising correspondents/lawyers to ensure that claims are handled as economically as possible. The objective being to reach a conclusion to the case which is acceptable to the Member and the Club.
  • Other duties include estimation of files, attending meetings as necessary, meeting visiting correspondents and lawyers and preparation of file notes.
  • To attend and contribute to internal meetings as appropriate.
  • Ad Hoc duties as required.

About You

Knowledge/Experience

  • 1-3 years of claims handling experience in personal injury or medical claims, preferably gained from within a P&I Club, lawyers, ship owners or ships agents.
  • Familiar with maritime liabilities.
  • Computer literate and familiar with all MS Office packages (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc).
  • Knowledge of insurance software e.g. Electronic Document Management System or BPMS System equivalent (good to have)

Qualifications/Education

  • Graduate (preferably in a maritime-related subject).

  • Customer focused – recognises the needs of external / internal customers and consistently delivers and meets promises made.

  • Detail orientated – ability to work accurately with detailed information and work to key dates and/or milestones.
  • Negotiating / influencing – ability to influence and persuade people at all levels and to negotiate on behalf of members/insureds to ensure the best outcome possible.
