Candidates are expected to:-

  • Assume the role of the Head of the deck department and Master’s deputy;
  • Ensure cargo operations and related safety measures are implemented;
  • Liaise with shore authorities and ensure awareness of Safety Management System;
  • Ensure deck crew follow safe working practices as defined in company procedures;
  • Identify potential ship hazards associated with deck operations and advise the Master accordingly;
  • Instruct Cadets/Junior Officers/Ratings on relevant QHSSE and shipboard procedures;
  • Perform stability and related calculations for cargo and ballasting;
  • Notify the Master immediately of any defects onboard ship which may affect safety and structural integrity of ship which may put the marine environment at risk;
  • Assign Deck Officers/Ratings specific roles and responsibilities with respect to the deck department as defined in the Safety Management System; and
  • Investigate non-conformances and apply corrective action(s) in consultation with the Master.
  • Ensure the implementation of safety, health and environmental protection policy onboard the ship.
  • Be part of the appraisal process and coordination of onboard training requirements.

The ideal candidate must:-

  • Possess a Certificate of Competency (Deck) Class 2; and
  • Possess at least 3 years of experience as a Chief Mate onboard a container vessel.
