JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY:
The Tooling Engineer is responsible for designing, sourcing, improving, and maintaining tools required for GTF engine maintenance and assembly. This role involves defining and managing tool specifications, working with suppliers to resolve issues identified during validation tests, and leading projects aimed at improving product quality through tooling advancements. The Tooling Engineer will also provide technical support, create training materials for complex or critical tools, and lead tooling failure investigations and corrective actions. Additionally, the engineer will oversee the receiving of tools, training of employees on tool usage, and preparing for Day 1 operations. May require working in shifts.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Participate in Request for Proposals (RFPs) for sourcing tools required for GTF engines, including sourcing from Pratt & Whitney and third-party suppliers as per contract requirements.
- Design new tools or improve existing tools based on requests from process engineers, assembly engineers, and other users.
- Define and manage tool specifications, including Verification Plan (VP), Acceptance Method (AM), and Preventive Maintenance (PM) plans for applicable tools.
- Receive and inspect newly sourced tools to ensure they meet quality standards and operational requirements.
- Perform reception inspections for newly sourced tools and support engineers in completing acceptance and validation tests.
- Analyze test results and collaborate with suppliers to address any issues found during tool testing and validation.
- Lead or participate in projects aimed at improving product quality through tooling improvements and innovations.
- Develop and deliver training materials for operators, especially for complex or critical tools, and provide training on proper tool usage and maintenance.
- Ensure all employees are trained and familiar with new tools prior to Day 1 operations.
- Support or lead investigations into tooling failures, providing corrective actions and ensuring continuous improvement in tooling performance.
- Collaborate with engineering, production, and quality teams to ensure the successful implementation and integration of new tooling solutions.
- Assist in preparations for Day 1 operations, ensuring all necessary tools are in place and ready for use, and that all relevant teams are properly trained.
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES Minimum Qualifications (Education/Certification/Licensure/Professional Membership)
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong background in tooling design and manufacturing processes.
- Knowledge of engineering principles and design software (e.g. CAD, CAM).
Minimum Experience:
- 10+ years of experience in tooling design or engineering, preferably in an aerospace or manufacturing environment.
- Experience in sourcing and managing tooling suppliers, as well as participating in RFP processes.
- Proven track record in analyzing and troubleshooting tooling-related issues and implementing improvements.
- Experience in creating training materials and delivering training to operators.
