Main Purpose:
To support Trafigura’s developing business across the APAC region, by providing legal advice in connection with contentious, transactional and regulatory matters across the entire portfolio of Trafigura’s commercial trading activities. Such activities include the trading of physically and financially settled oil, oil products, bulk commodities (including coal and iron ore), non-ferrous concentrates and refined metals, power and carbon. To provide additional legal support, as necessary, in connection with ancillary elements of Trafigura’s business, including banking finance, structured trade finance, exchange trading (both physical and derivative products) and the transportation, warehousing and storage of commodities.
To work to meet the legal demands of Trafigura’s business and to provide advice in a clear, succinct and practical manner often under tight time constraints and commercial imperatives.

Key Responsibilities
To be the first point of contact in the region for the provision of legal services, including:
- Contentious Advice: Assisting during all stages of disputes from initial advice to managing arbitration, civil litigation, mediation and enforcement proceedings, primarily with respect to trading and shipping disputes, but also other disputes or investigations as necessary
- Transactional Advice: Advising on joint venture agreements, share purchase agreements, shareholders’ agreements, structured trade finance-related documentation including prepayments, banking facilities, sale and purchase contracts and other related documentation
- Regulatory Advice: Relating to applicable regulations in respect of new and existing business across the APAC region, including in relation to sanctions, anti-bribery and corruption and financial regulation including with respect to derivatives and futures trading
To identify key legal risks and to report these to management and the commercial stakeholders in a timely and proactive manner and to develop effective and practical strategies to mitigate the same
To work as part of the wider Global Legal Team in providing excellent legal service to the business in a dynamic and fast-paced work environment
To procure and manage, where necessary, external legal advice and support
To work as an effective member of the Global Legal Team and to establish strong working relationships across the business
Planning, developing and providing training to staff on legal issues and on an ad-hoc basis and as part of established training programs in relation to legal and compliance policies
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Legal professional qualification with at least 7 years post qualification experience
Qualified in either the UK, Singapore, Australia or New Zealand with credible private practice experience in such jurisdiction
Preference for experience with complex high value contentious matters in the commodity trading context
Preference for in-house experience in a trading or equivalent commercial environment, with international and cross border experience
Broad range of legal skills
Good IT and organisational skills
Excellent command of the English language
