Role Purpose (Why do we need this role?)

Assist in the day to day strategic planning & development of the Swire shipping network in close collaboration & communication with external stakeholders (MLOs, Feeders) & key internal stakeholders across different functions: Commercial &Trade, Scheduling and Deployment, Operations and Logistics.

The objective is to improve business margins by reducing cargo distribution costs through operational & cargo flow optimization – in the assessment, planning & design phases (not execution) and through subsequent follow-ups & systematic analysis.

Role Accountabilities (What is this role responsible for delivering?)

Engage in network products and/or services planning

• Conduct industry profiling, market segmentation and gap analysis.

• Analyse market and commercial data on products and/or existing services.

• Benchmark key competitors' service networks and identify strength and weaknesses within own organisational network.

• Conduct feasibility studies on new and potential products and services, loops and/or strings.

Network Flows Monitoring Planning (Ladens and Empties)

  • Continuously monitor internal network flow for both historical flows, and provide forward flows analysis with data from commercial forecast, forecasted equipment imbalance, and global macro-economics trend.
  • Conduct quarterly reviews with capacity and logistics team, and make proposal to feeder/steering/planning team to ensure laden and empties volume are taking the least cost commercially viable routing.
  • Maintain excellent communication with the capacity teams to ensure effective routing per agreed quarterly plan, and/or provide dynamic updates to quarterly plan in case any shorter term disruption.
  • Manage and communicate the changes to network design, and ensure that any such impact to network flow is highlighted and cost to transit kept to a minimum.
  • Suggest new optimization methods to improve Equipment Repositioning Optimiser.

Optimise performance of products and/or services

• Support the creation of new services and products to meet network demands and requirements.

• Support vessel chartering decisions based on cargo forecasts and vessel availability.

• Conduct optimal sizing of vessels in existing network, based on forecasts from trade and commercial teams, feeder partners, and partners.

• Identify cost variances against budget to ensure cost optimisation.

• Monitor vessel allocations, connections and feasibility of schedules.

• Conduct analysis on trade-offs between volume, market share, yield, reliability and costs.

• Provide feedback on product performance and participate in service network reviews.

Manage network relationships

• Develop and maintain relationships with key partners to expand network coverage.

• Monitor activities and performance of key partners against contract terms and identify performance problems or contractual issues.

• Resolve contracts, disputes or performance issues at an operational level.

General

  1. Support projects/ improvements related to short term or medium-term operational changes in Swire Shipping network that will have a significant impact.
  2. Support projects with the sustainability and energy transition team that will have a significant impact to the network.
  3. Assist in Proof of concept with market software providers or internal digital team to help design and implement an algorithm based tool that helps with network optimisation.
  4. Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager from time-to-time including coordinating with legal on partnership agreements.

People Management

  • Lead employees to meet the organisation's expectations for productivity, quality, and goal accomplishment.
  • Provide oversight and direction to the employees in the team in accordance with the organisation's policies and procedures.
  • Plan staffing levels and work with Human Resources to recruit, interview, select, hire, and employ the right people within budgetary guidelines.

  • Manage and maintain effective employee work schedules including assignments, job rotation, training, vacations and paid time off, cover for absenteeism, and overtime scheduling.
  • Maintain two-way transparent communication. Appropriately communicate organization information through department meetings, one-on-one meetings, and appropriate email, IM, and regular interpersonal communication.
  • Deliver key people related activities in conjunction with the People Division that will lead to the enhanced engagement and retention of team members.

Key Qualifications & Skills (What knowledge will ensure success in the role?)

Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree, preferably with background in Maritime Studies.
  • At least 2-3 years in the transportation industry, preferably with 1-2 years in pricing, trades, logistics or operations team.

Technical Skills

  • Experience in container or liner trade or shipping business preferred.
  • Well-developed business partnering skills.
