Make it your story.This position reports toEngineering ManagerYour role and responsibilitiesWe are looking for an R&D Intern – Battery System with a strong focus on marine battery modeling to support our efforts in integrating battery energy storage systems (ESS) into shipboard power plants. The candidate will be responsible for developing advanced battery system models, evaluating lifecycle performance, and designing an optimized battery sizing tool. This internship program can be extended into an industrial PhD research program, covering advanced research topics related to energy storage and marine electrification. The work model for the role is: Onsite This role is contributing to the Process Automation Marine and Ports Business of ABB, Singapore. You will be mainly accountable for: • Developing battery system models for shipboard power applications using MATLAB, Python, or other relevant programming languages. • Analyzing and simulating battery performance, degradation, and lifecycle estimation under marine operational conditions. • Documenting battery (ESS) functions, features, and integration strategies into shipboard power plants. • Developing a battery sizing tool to optimize energy storage selection based on power plant requirements and lifecycle economics. • Collaborating with cross-functional teams (power system engineers, project engineers, and product research engineers) to ensure proper integration of battery systems. • Researching advanced energy storage technologies, control strategies, and their applications in maritime environments. • Participating in the development of an industrial PhD research roadmap, identifying key topics for long-term investigation.Qualifications for the role
  • You are a student of any of the following Engineering disciplines: Electrical, Energy Systems or Mechanical.
  • Extensive programming skills in MATLAB, Python, or other relevant simulation tools.
  • Basic understanding of battery modelling techniques, including electrochemical, thermal, and ageing models.
  • Basic understanding of shipboard power systems, energy storage integration, and power plant architectures.
  • Basic understanding of battery lifecycle analysis, degradation mechanisms, and economic assessment methodologies.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop mathematical models and optimize system performance.
  • You are at ease in communicating in English.
  • You hold work rights in Singapore.
