Systems Consultant - Freelance (AIX and AS400)

This is a position with the Professional Services and Managed Services division, responsible for supporting IBM Power (AS400 and AIX) technologies, from design through implementation and support. A system consultant performs a wide variety of installation, configuration, and upgrading of servers and related hardware and software. Responsibility also includes administration, problem diagnostic, testing and resolution of system, hardware, software and infrastructure. The role holder will work closely with the team in solutioning to meet business objectives, implementing the solution and resolving complex technical issues arise.

As a solutions / service integrator, the Systems Consultant is expected to support all systems planning, implementation, installation, configuration, troubleshooting, upgrades, backup recovery and administration of AS400 and AIX platforms.

Responsibilities:

  • Involve in the full deployment and integration during a project life-cycle. Will be hands-on with the implementation of Systems technologies surrounding the area of IBM OS/400, Data Management & Protection, Security Key Life Cycle management, High Availability & Disaster Recovery.
  • Manage the systems implementation and administration for IBM VIOS / VIOC, POWERHA and GPFS.
  • Responsible for the administration, maintenance and patching for AS400 and AIX systems.
  • Provide support to managed contracts.
  • Proactive maintenance and monitoring of AS400 systems, identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks.
  • Rotation 24x7 duties and support to internal and external customers.
  • Troubleshooting and resolving hardware and software issues, minimizing downtime.
  • Implementing and managing system security measures, including access controls and user authentication.
  • Plan and execute the deployment of system patches, firmware updates, and software upgrades to ensure the AS400 platform is up-to-date and secure.
  • Expertise in diagnosing and resolving performance problems impacting data, applications, and systems. Utilizes tools such as IBM iDoctor, DBMON Traces, and Job Watcher for effective troubleshooting.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to the AS400 infrastructure, collaborating with relevant teams to ensure timely resolution and minimal business impact.
  • Developing and maintaining backup and disaster recovery plans.
  • Developing and enhancing applications using RPG, CL, and SQL.
  • Manage Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, virtual networks, storage systems, and other critical components of the clients’ IT infrastructure.
  • Participating in system audits and security reviews.
  • Creating and maintaining comprehensive system documentation.
  • Supporting data restoration requests.
  • Contributing to AS400 migration projects.

Requirements:

  • Diploma / Degree in Computer Science / Information Technology.
  • Minimum 7 years experience in enterprise systems infrastructure and in IBM i-series server implementation and support from a similar field in System Integration.
  • Systems related certification. E.g. IBM AS400 Certification or similar.
  • Experience with AS400, BRMS, SKLM and native Data Protection.
  • IBM or equivalent systems certification will be an advantage.
  • Knowledge of storage technologies such as EMC, Hitachi, IBM Storage or Huawei will be an advantage.
  • Knowledge of virtualisation technologies such as IBM VIOS/VIOC.
  • Solid foundation in IBM i-Series Systems infrastructure.
  • Experience in Linux will be of advantage.
  • Effective communications skills.
  • Must be willing to expand in skills and knowledge.
  • Proven expertise in RPG, CL, and SQL programming languages.
  • Familiarity with IBM iSeries tools (e.g., Navigator for i, IBM Power Systems).
  • Strong understanding of AS400 security best practices.
  • Experience with LTO tape and VTL backup systems.
  • Excellent understanding of storage solutions (SAN/NAS) and network architectures.
  • Knowledge of scripting in PowerShell for task automation and configuration management.
  • Experience with IBM iscripting (e.g., CL, REXX) and job scheduling.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
