Research Assistant - Invertebrate Ecology Lab
The at Nanyang Technological University is an interdisciplinary school that aims to be a world leader in environmental research focused on Asian environmental challenges. The ASE integrates earth and environmental life science, ecology, engineering and technology, human ecology, humanities, and the social sciences to address key issues of the environment and sustainability.
The school is inviting applications for a Research Assistant (RA) position to support fieldwork, laboratory work, and administrative tasks at the Tropical Ecology & Entomology (TEE) Lab at ASE. The RA will collaborate closely with Associate Prof. Eleanor Slade and the Forest Ecology group at ASE.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist with various fieldwork activities
Assist day-to-day operations of the lab and experimental related matter
Curate samples and specimens in the lab
Use digital auto-montage systems to capture high-quality images of specimens
Aid in DNA extraction of samples
Mentor undergraduate students in field and lab work
Contribute to outreach activities (e.g. lab website management, writing blogs, creating video diaries, and managing social media tasks)
Assist with data analysis and contribute to the preparation of scientific papers
Job Requirements:
A bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences
Strong background and knowledge in entomology
Experience with museum curation techniques
Familiarity with databasing biological specimens and working with insect collections
Proficient in databasing software (e.g. Access), and statistical packages (e.g. R)
Experience in specimen imaging
Willingness to learn new techniques and skills
Ability to work effectively in a team and collaborate with others.
As the position requires stakeholder engagement in English, candidate must have strong written and oral communication skills in English
Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
The successful candidate will join the Forest Ecology group at ASE working under Associate Prof. Eleanor Slade, joining a vibrant, international scientific department. Candidates with prior experience in entomology with field and lab work experience are preferred.
