Position Overview:

The Principal Electronics Engineer is a senior leadership role within EOS Defence Systems (EOS DS) and is responsible for solving problems using disciplined engineering techniques (e.g., software, mechanical, electronics, system, testing, project etc) to assure and advise on the development and/or delivery of products. The Principal Electronics Engineer possess deep technical and industry knowledge with the ability to influence and guide company direction, ensuring strategic alignment. The Principal Electronics Engineer is also responsible for developing products and designs that support the product development and product goals of EOS DS.

The Principal Electronics Engineer will lead and mentor engineers, up to and including Senior Engineers. They may provide technical assistance to multiple teams and provide a high level of support to those teams. In consultation with senior leadership, suggest staffing and workflow priorities and monitor and manage performance, health and wellbeing.

The Principal Electronics Engineer will have extensive engineering experience across the product lifecycle in a Defence environment, allowing them to provide leadership across engineering teams and execute technical authority as allocated.

Primary Duties:

Specific Functions & Tasks

  • Provide necessary guidance and direction to produce electronics designs and analysis that satisfy defined product development requirements in the specified time frames and exercise allocated technical authority.
  • Work with systems engineers to ensure all requirements are identified, captured and analysed.
  • Lead conceptual design and schematic capture of complex electronic circuits.
  • Ensure test and evaluation activities on electronics and system designs are undertaken to verify and sign-off of all design requirements.
  • Initiate and/or participate in planning on electronics designs.
  • Develop, review and champion the electronics engineering process within EOS DS.
  • Ensure the preparation and review of all documentation to support designs.
  • Perform conceptual, preliminary and detailed design of complex electronics assemblies.
  • Simulate analogue and digital circuits.
  • Document designs including calculations, design options and decisions.
  • Prepare for and contribute to design reviews.
  • Perform test, evaluation, characterisation, verification & validation of electronic subsystems in collaboration with test engineers.
  • Prototype electronic circuits, wiring harnesses and other systems.
  • Work closely with other engineering disciplines to ensure cohesive and complete electronic designs are delivered on time and on budget and meet project requirements.
  • Apply DFx principles (manufacturability, testability, excellence).
  • Review work and provide guidance and mentorship to Senior Electronics Engineers.
  • Engage key stakeholders and subject matter experts across technical engineering and specialty areas to understand the concept of operations and user needs to elicit and decompose electrical requirements.
  • Adhere to and ensure understanding and compliance with company procedures to achieve a safe and secure work environment.

Strategy and Architecture

  • Contribute to and influence strategy for emerging, new, and current technologies, products, services within Defence Systems and have authority over and accountable for the innovation and delivery practices required to assure the implementation of this strategy.
  • Assess and ensure a high level of leadership and deep industry, defence system knowledge and systems engineering best practice to maintain competitive advantage, exploit EOS DS technologies and minimise exposure and risk.
  • Communicate, advocate and influence persuasively through effective negotiation and communication while fostering an environment of innovation, learning and continuous improvement within and outside the organisation.

Development and implementation of Engineering

  • Self-initiated and managed under broad direction and governance to be responsible for demonstrably leading self and others to produce designs and products that satisfy defined requirements in the specified time frames and meet group objectives.
  • Undertake cohesive best practice designs and analysis and develop efficient work practices to support product development activities and business outcomes.
  • Lead and work collaboratively with engineers across functional teams to solve complex problems as a team and ensure all requirements are identified, captured, and analysed such that the design/product can be developed that satisfies the safety, quality, policy, legislative and design authority requirements.
  • Undertake clear and pragmatic tests, evaluation, and verification activities on integrated system designs and prototypes to verify and provide recommendations for sign-off of all design/product requirements to the Chief Engineer and Design Authorities based on relevant legislative requirements, standards, and contracts.
  • Prepare and review all documentation required to support designs and provide tailored advice and recommendations to teams and decision makers.

Relationship and engagement

  • Actively listen, share knowledge and experience, provide guidance and mentorship, and work collaboratively to mobilise teams across engineering and other relevant internal and external customers to deliver engineering and business outcomes.
  • Work with Production Engineers and Technicians to ensure the best design solutions are delivered to solve production problems and obtain business outcomes under the broad direction of the Chief Engineer.
  • Support the leadership alongside with the EOS Executive, Project Managers, and Project Engineers to ensure design solutions are delivered on time and on budget and meet other project management requirements.
  • Communicate insights and provide thorough engineering judgement for progress and the advancement of engineering solutions.
  • Apply interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to requirements including analysis of functional and non-functional requirements and functional performance specifications to develop effective solutions.

Delivery and operation

  • Guide the design and execution of user acceptance testing and other verification activities to provide recommendations to the Chief Engineer and other Design Authorities.
  • Support production and review manufacturing and supplier requirements to meet specified timeframes, engineering standards, and business outcomes.
