Laboratory Technician (Research & Learning Center)
The Lab Technician at the Research and Learning Center at Singapore Oceanarium plays a crucial role in advancing scientific research and conservation efforts. This position involves conducting and supporting a wide range of scientific investigations and experiments, with a focus on marine and freshwater aquatic animals. The Lab Technician will work closely with the Education department and the Conservation & Science teams to plan, set up, and undertake controlled experiments and trials. This role requires meticulous attention to detail, as it involves recording, analyzing, and interpreting data, maintaining laboratory equipment, managing chemical stocks, and running demonstration experiments. The Lab Technician will also contribute to both in-house and external research and conservation projects, ensuring that the aquarium remains at the forefront of scientific developments and education.
Responsibilities
- Maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring all instruments are calibrated, clean, and in proper working condition.
- Manage chemical inventories and prepare reagents and solutions as needed for experiments.
- Ensure all laboratory supplies and glassware are well-stocked and in safe working order.
- Train new laboratory users to ensure compliance with all safety regulations and best practices within the laboratory environment.
- Coordinate with lab users to ensure risk assessments are carried out.
- Carry out proper waste disposal procedures.
- Develop, review, and update laboratory protocols and Standard Operating Procedures.
- Run demonstration experiments for educational purposes, working closely with the Education department.
- Conduct and assist in scientific investigations and experiments in collaboration with Research and Animal Care teams.
- Record, analyze, and interpret experimental data to contribute to ongoing research projects.
- Collaborate with both in-house and external researchers on research projects, providing technical expertise.
- Participate in Research team meetings and contribute to the presentation and publication of findings.
Requirements
- 2–4 years of experience in a laboratory setting, preferably within the field of marine biology, aquatic science, or a related discipline.
- Must have some aquatic animal husbandry experience.
- Strong background in scientific methods and data analysis.
- Detail-oriented; able to accurately record and interpret experimental results.
- Proficient in handling delicate instruments and live specimens.
- Familiarity with laboratory software, data analysis tools, and general office applications.
- Ability to diagnose and resolve issues with laboratory equipment and experiments.
- Efficiently manage multiple tasks and prioritize workload to meet deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively collaborate with team members and present findings.
