What a Material Engineer does at HP (Ink Plant, Tuas location) :
  • Designs engineering solutions for chemical- based processes, technologies, and formulations for product design and manufacturing based on established chemistry and engineering principles and in accordance with development technology practices and guidelines.
  • Develops and implements chemical process and operating equipment specifications, chemical formulations, and test plans for new and existing products; assists manufacturing partners with issue diagnosis and problem-solving.
  • Collaborates and communicates with management, internal, and outsourced research and development partners regarding design status, project progress, and issue resolution.
  • Leads a project team of other chemists and chemical engineers and internal and outsourced research and development partners to develop reliable, cost effective and high quality solutions for moderately-complex products.
  • Represents the chemistry team for all phases of larger and more-complex development projects.
  • Provides guidance and mentoring to less- experienced staff members.
  • Manage and expands relationships with internal and outsourced development partners on chemistry and material engineering and development.
  • Acquire knowledge on Ink Chemistry from raw materials to finished ink product.
  • Understand materials, process and equipment interactions on the resultant chemistry of finished product and ink chemistry requirements for printing performance.
  • Collaborate with Process, Product Engineers for ink characterization/margins study, perform process-product FMEA.
  • Be proficient and/or develop models and analytical procedures to further the understanding and performance of Latex/Future Inks/HP inks and interactions with Printhead and Media.
  • Participates as a member of ink chemist community and internal and outsourced development partners to develop reliable, cost effective and high quality solutions.
  • Define and implement chemical and process analysis and test plans to test formulations and resolve manufacturing issues.

Individuals who do well in this role at HP, usually possess:

  • Master’s OR PhD degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, 4-6 years of experience in one or more of the following areas – organic, polymer, colloidal, physical or inorganic.

  • Typically 4-6 years of experience in a high technology manufacturing or R&D environment.

  • Broad experience with and understanding of chemistry concepts, practices and laboratory procedures.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent understanding and experience in designing chemical formulations and processes and associated production tooling and processes.

  • Evaluating and making suggestions for improvements to chemical and process analysis techniques used to test and validate formulations and processes and to resolve manufacturing issues.

  • Ability to effectively communicate process architectures and product formulations, design proposals and negotiate options at management.
  • Possesses strong teamwork and ability to collaborate, communicate across geographies, levels and functions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; mastery in English and local language.
  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Able & willing to travel.
