Director, Real Estate Economic Research
The Director for Real Estate Economic Research will work with the global co-head for research and strategy for real estate private markets. The role will require interfacing with the entire real estate leadership team (but in particular, the APAC real estate leadership team); and other groups in Manulife Investment Management who are engaged with data, information flow, and analytics to formulate and complete overall research strategy. This particular aspect of research strategy focuses on the needs of our APAC business: from transactions to asset management; from performance evaluation to market assessments; the candidate will help spearhead the Research & Strategy function as we cale our business in APAC.
Manulife Investment Management manages over $20B of real estate (300+ properties) across North America and Asia on behalf of both Manulife’s general account and third-party funds and accounts.
Responsibilities:
- With limited supervision, work with internal Manulife Investment Management teams and third-party data providers to integrate datasets
- With guidance from the global co-heads of research and strategy, help create the research platform and strategic approach for the APAC business
- Conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis for model performance and accuracy; backtesting for predictive analytics
- Play a significant role in identifying market trends and extracting insights across the portfolio to aid in strategic decision-making.
- Help drive process improvements including automating manual processes and integrate inputs from other teams into predictive analytics that support the investment decision-making process
- Help prepare, present, and report research output results, present and future initiatives, to leadership
- Other adhoc projects and initiatives as needed
Qualifications:
- Experience with traditional third-party RE data sources in Asia (JLL REIS, ANREV, Oxford, etc) is a requirement. Expertise working with most or all of the data sources above will distinguish the ideal candidate.
- Experience with new RE data sources (satellite, mobility data) and applications (redefining RE neighborhoods and micromarkets), including for alternative sectors (Self Storage, SFRs, data centers, etc)
- Significant (10+ years, ideally) experience with research in the APAC region
- Some experience/familiarity across different geographies in Asia will be ideal, along with appropriate language skills to foster communications across a global team
- Ability and willingness to travel to help support a global distributed team
