Research Fellow (Geophysics)
The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) at Nanyang Technological University seeks a Research Fellow to integrate geological and geophysical observations—combining space geodesy and dense-array seismology—to advance the understanding of fundamental earthquake physics.
The candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. Wei ShengJi and collaborate with researchers on this 3-year project, which aims to provide a holistic understanding of the fundamental physics of earthquakes by integrating geodesy and dense array data. The geodesy component focuses on data acquisition and processing to produce high-resolution deformation maps and determine fault geometry. The geophysics component emphasizes rupture imaging for target earthquakes and interpreting results to uncover key physical processes. We will be hiring research staff and students for this project, making it an exciting time to join our team.
Key Responsibilities:
Acquire and process multi-source seismic and geodetic data for earthquake events.
Conduct forward modeling and inversion using geodetic and seismic observations.
Integrate datasets (3D surface deformation, geodetic fault geometry, back-projection rupture speeds) to constrain finite fault models capturing complex rupture processes.
Compare rupture models with lab-based rock failure experiments and numerical simulations to refine understanding of fundamental earthquake physics.
Advance fundamental earthquake physics and by translate scientific discoveries into engineering strategies that mitigate future seismic risks.
Publish peer-reviewed scientific papers annually.
Present research findings at international conferences each year.
Provide co-mentorship for a PhD student and a Research Assistant.
Collaborate with staff and students, Project PIs, and multiple international faculty as part of the project.
Job Requirements:
Ph.D. in geoscience, geophysics, geodesy, natural hazards, computational modeling, or a related field.
Demonstrated expertise in geophysics and numerical modeling, with knowledge on earthquake science.
Familiarity with analyzing geophysical and geologic datasets (e.g., geodetic, seismic, geological, marine geophysics, gravity) and understanding of geophysical inversion methods.
Proficiency in programming with Python or MATLAB; familiarity with Fortran or C is a plus.
Proven track record of publishing research relevant to the position in Tier 1 journals.
As the position requires stakeholder engagement in English, candidate must be fluent in English.
Ability to work independently on research projects while contributing to a collaborative team environment.
EOS is a University Research Institute at Nanyang Technological University that conducts fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, towards safer and more sustainable societies. For more information on EOS please visit .
EOS maintains a regional network of geophysical observation stations in collaboration with neighboring countries in Southeast Asia, that are supported by the EOS Centre for Geohazard Observations, as well as a Remote Sensing Lab (EOS-RS). Computational resources are available through a dedicated cluster and collaboration with the High-Performance Computing Centre of NTU. In addition, EOS hosts state-of-the-art analytical facilities for petrological and geochemical analysis, and a Community Engagement office that co-creates learning opportunities for a range of audiences to promote a safer and more sustainable future.
EOS seeks a diverse and inclusive workforce and is committed to equality of opportunity. We welcome applications from all and recruit on the basis of merit, regardless of age, race, gender, religion, marital status and family responsibilities, or disability.
