People, Culture and Communications - Wellbeing & Workplace Relations oversees Telstra's wellbeing and workplace relations programs.

About the Role

The Health & Safety Specialist will play a pivotal role in driving a culture that promotes health, safety and sustainability at the heart of everything we do across the Telstra Group.

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Embedding and operationalising Telstra’s Safety Management System into daily operations within the business function, including HSWE Standards.

  • Uplift the health, safety and wellbeing maturity across our global organisation.

  • Identify and implement areas to improve health, safety and wellbeing across our global teams.

  • Development, review and updating of functional risk register and project risk registers with identified HSWE risks on a regular basis or whenever conditions change.

  • Assess risks and operationalisation of mitigating controls for new/emerging activities being undertaken by the business function

  • Undertake low/ moderate incident management and investigations using basic 5 whys methodology, in alignment with the Incident Management and Investigation procedure.

  • Monitor and assist with close out of relevant actions resulting from incident investigations.

  • Complete line of business monthly reporting and analytics to provide the requisite level of detailed information and analytics of incidents, injuries, inspections and other metrics.

  • Development of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Management Plans,

  • Develop procedures, guidance materials and tools to mitigate HSWE risks in collaboration with SSW team members as required to comply with the Telstra HSWE Management System.

  • Conduct assurance activities on frontline employee activities to assess compliance with localised procedures.

  • Monitor and assist with close out of relevant actions resulting from Telstra frontline assurance activities.

  • Conduct assurance activities on contractors’ HSE systems to ensure contractors are conducting activities as they advised they would.

  • Monitor close out of relevant actions resulting from contractor HSE assurance activities.

  • Complete first line HSE audits to verify critical controls.

  • Escalation of incident trends and systemic issues requiring discussion at Cross Functional Risk Forums, in conjunction with SSW team.

  • Assist where required with external audit activities and inspections.

To be successful in this role, you must have the following qualifications:

Essential

  • Relevant diploma or tertiary qualifications with a minimum of 5 years’ experience as a HSWE specialist/advisor, preferably working in a high-risk industry.

  • A high-level understanding of HSWE management systems and risk management principles

  • Experience working across multiple countries to implement health, safety and wellbeing programs

  • Proven record of improving health, safety and wellbeing within an organisation.

  • Sound knowledge of, and experience in managing health, safety and environment standards and regulations across multiple countries

  • Experience facilitating risk assessments and the maintenance of risk profiles for business units

  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and influence across the organisation

  • Superior communication (written and verbal), coaching, interpersonal and presentation skills.

  • Experience in HSWE data reporting

  • Research and problem-solving skills.

  • Proven ability to work independently and to handle multiple or competing priorities.

Highly desirable

  • Lead Auditor qualification and experience in the planning and undertaking of audits

  • Experience developing and implementing Critical Risk Controls, as well as assessing Critical Control effectiveness

  • Experience in crisis and emergency management.
