The Sustainability COE is modeled after the Sustainable Medical Technology Institute (SMTI) and will have the same mandate as the SMTI. In this role, the Packaging Engineer will be responsible for execution of the broader R&D Sustainability strategy at BD. This individual will help integrate sustainability focus into programs for making changes to current products and to new product development programs in all 8 BD businesses. In particular, this individual will support Design for Sustainability efforts within BD’s R&D portfolio. This will require ability on the candidate’s part to work cross-functionally and with different stakeholders across geographies. Some travel may be required.This is a critical role in the COE and this individual will drive activities focused on assessing and reducing the carbon footprint of BD products. The long-term vision is to have environmental sustainability become an integral part of the product and packaging development process, and the work done by him /her will be instrumental in enabling this outcome. He / she will strike a balance of fast-paced execution with thoroughness of approach, using iterative concept development informed by stakeholder feedback.The R&D Packaging Engineer supports design, development, and validation of medical device packaging. The successful candidate will contribute to and/or lead a portfolio of packaging projects and ensure that best practices are employed and will have the opportunity to develop as an internal subject matter expert with respect to fundamental packaging materials and design. This includes test method development and alignment to existing and evolving global standards governing packaging.This position will be accountable for supporting medium to high complexity projects, products, systems, or services within BD. Regular interaction and collaboration with R&D and project team members within each Business Unit is critical for the successful execution of responsibilities.Job Description
  • Work as part of the broader SMTI team to assess environmental impact of BD products, with focus on products in Greater Asia region.
  • Work with R&D representatives to obtain feedback, make changes as necessary.
  • Demonstrated understanding of translating customer needs into engineering requirements leading to specific packaging, and process specifications
  • Collaboration with Manufacturing and cross-functional teams (including Manufacturing Technology, Quality, Marketing, Regulatory, Operations) across businesses to propose; assess the feasibility of; and implement packaging design, material, or process changes, including creative solutions to business or technical needs.
  • Synthesize, develop, update, and optimize designs that meet requirements by understanding design space with design options and tradeoffs, managing critical parameters, leverage strong engineering fundamentals and tools and integrating manufacturing principles early in the development.
  • Assess manufacturability of new packaging designs, development of packaging processes and changes to existing packaging designs and processes
  • Support cost and supply continuity needs through continuous improvement, technology assessment, and innovation.
  • Develop and execute packaging test methods that specify measurement equipment, test set-up, measurement systems analysis, and data analysis and align to business and regulatory requirements and needs.
  • Write technical reports based on experimental investigations.
  • Solve technical challenges drawing on a combination of experience, sound judgment, problem-solving skills, engineering first principles, and advanced engineering methods.
  • Comply with all local, state, federal, and BD safety regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Comply with all local BD quality policies, procedures, and practices through consistent application of sound quality assurance principles.
Preferred Requirements
  • Bachelor Degree in Mechanical/Packaging or related Engineering field is required.
  • Minimum 2-3 years of packaging experience, preferably in medical device or food contact packaging.
  • Experience/knowledge with CAD tools for packaging design
  • Demonstrated understanding of different packaging solutions available to designers, including flexible and rigid packaging applications, familiarity with packaging materials and their limitations.
  • Experience with forming, sealing process and tooling design and development for form/fill/seal, flow-wrap, pouch solutions.
  • Experience with fabrication process to ensure manufacturability.
  • Basic understanding of statistics and design of experiments.
  • Knowledge of the following standards: ISO 13485, ISO 11607, and ISO 14971.
