The Managing Director for a Single Family Office will oversee all aspects of the family office’s investment, financial, and operational management, ensuring alignment with the family’s strategic goals, values, and vision for long-term wealth preservation and growth. This is a senior leadership role that requires deep expertise in multi-asset class investment management, wealth planning, and risk mitigation, as well as a proven track record of building trust and managing relationships within a high-net-worth family setting. As Managing Director, you will act as the primary advisor and operational leader, coordinating with external advisors and a wide range of service providers, and ensuring comprehensive oversight across all the family’s financial interests.
In this role, you will work closely with family principals and other trusted advisors to develop and implement the family office’s strategic investment policy and wealth management strategy, ensuring a prudent and tailored approach to risk, return, and liquidity needs. Beyond investments, you will oversee tax planning, philanthropic initiatives, estate structuring, and governance practices, facilitating transparent and effective communication among family members to support intergenerational goals and continuity. This role calls for a hands-on, detail-oriented professional with a strong background in finance, a commitment to confidentiality, and the ability to adapt to an evolving landscape of family dynamics and financial complexity.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Investment and Wealth Management
- Develop and implement a comprehensive investment strategy aligned with the family’s goals, including asset allocation across public and private equity, real estate, and alternative investments.
- Oversee portfolio construction, performance tracking, and risk management, ensuring adherence to established financial objectives and risk tolerance.
- Lead due diligence and analysis for potential new investments, providing well-researched recommendations to family principals.
Financial Oversight and Reporting
- Ensure robust financial controls, budgeting, and reporting processes are in place to manage liquidity, expenses, and cash flow effectively.
- Coordinate with accountants, tax advisors, and auditors to manage tax efficiency, compliance, and regulatory obligations across jurisdictions.
- Present regular financial performance updates, investment reports, and portfolio insights to family members, facilitating clear and transparent communication.
Family Governance and Communication
- Establish and manage family governance structures, including regular family meetings, reporting protocols, and education initiatives to foster financial literacy.
- Act as a trusted advisor and primary point of contact for family members, providing insights, guidance, and support for individual and shared financial objectives.
- Facilitate effective intergenerational planning, helping to align long-term objectives with the values and aspirations of family members across generations.
Philanthropy and Legacy Planning
- Support the family’s philanthropic goals by developing strategies for charitable giving, foundation management, and social impact initiatives.
- Work closely with family members to establish philanthropic goals, monitor impact, and ensure alignment with broader family values.
- Oversee legacy planning efforts, including estate structuring and succession planning, to protect and transfer wealth to future generations in a tax-efficient manner.
Risk Management and Compliance
- Identify and mitigate potential risks across investment, operational, and family matters, establishing robust governance and compliance practices.
- Ensure adherence to all regulatory requirements, maintaining full compliance across all areas of the family office’s operations.
- Review and manage insurance, security, and other risk mitigation policies to protect family assets and personal safety.
Operational Management and Vendor Coordination
- Oversee the family office’s day-to-day operations, including the coordination of third-party providers, advisors, and service vendors.
- Ensure optimal performance of banking, legal, real estate, and other external service relationships, negotiating contracts and monitoring service levels.
- Implement best practices in office management, administration, and technology, ensuring efficiency and confidentiality in all operational matters.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Economics, or a related field; MBA, CFA, CPA, or other relevant advanced qualifications preferred.
- 10+ years of experience in wealth management, investment management, or family office leadership, with demonstrated expertise in multi-asset class investing and wealth planning.
- Proven track record of successfully managing relationships within high-net-worth families or single-family offices, with a focus on trust, confidentiality, and discretion.
- Deep understanding of tax, estate, and succession planning strategies for high-net-worth individuals and families.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills, with the ability to work effectively with family members, advisors, and external partners.
- Strong analytical and financial modeling skills, with the ability to evaluate complex investment opportunities and articulate insights clearly.
- Commitment to the highest ethical standards, with a meticulous attention to detail and a proactive approach to risk management.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience managing a single-family office or working directly with high-net-worth families in a private investment setting.
- Exposure to international investment opportunities and multi-jurisdictional tax and legal considerations.
