Job Summary:
Hengrui Pharma is seeking an experienced and motivated Director of Peptide Drug Discovery to lead our efforts in the discovery and development of peptide-based therapeutics. The successful candidate will be responsible for driving peptide drug discovery programs from target identification through to preclinical development. This role requires strong scientific expertise in peptide chemistry, biology, and drug design, as well as the ability to lead cross-functional teams and collaborate with external partners. The Director will ensure innovative peptide drug discovery approaches are applied to bring novel therapies to market.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leadership and Strategy:
- Provide scientific leadership in peptide-based drug discovery, including peptide design, synthesis, optimization, and preclinical testing.
- Develop and execute a strategic roadmap for peptide drug discovery projects aligned with the company’s therapeutic focus and overall business objectives.
- Lead efforts in advancing peptide drug candidates from concept through preclinical development stages.
- Project Management:
- Lead and manage multidisciplinary teams (including chemistry, pharmacology, biology, and formulation experts) to execute peptide drug discovery programs.
- Ensure the timely advancement of peptide candidates through the drug discovery pipeline, including the management of project timelines, resources, and budgets.
- Oversee external collaborations with academic institutions, contract research organizations (CROs), and technology providers to support discovery efforts.
- Research and Development:
- Lead efforts in peptide design, chemical synthesis, and optimization, including modifications to improve stability, selectivity, and delivery.
- Collaborate with bioinformatics and target discovery teams to identify novel targets for peptide-based therapeutics.
- Oversee in vitro and in vivo studies to assess peptide efficacy, pharmacokinetics, safety, and other preclinical endpoints.
- Identify and implement new technologies for peptide screening, design, and optimization to enhance the discovery process.
- Collaboration and Partnership:
- Foster collaborations with internal teams and external partners, including academic institutions, CROs, and industry stakeholders.
- Participate in scientific conferences, publications, and presentations to promote the company’s peptide discovery efforts and stay at the forefront of the field.
- Regulatory and Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with industry regulations and internal quality standards throughout all stages of peptide drug discovery.
- Prepare scientific data packages, reports, and regulatory documents required for preclinical submissions and progression into clinical development.
Qualifications:
- Education: Ph.D. in peptide chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, or a related field with a strong focus on peptide therapeutics.
- Experience:
- 7+ years of experience in peptide drug discovery or related fields, with a proven track record of advancing peptide therapeutics through preclinical stages.
- Prior experience in managing drug discovery teams and leading cross-functional projects in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.
- Expertise in peptide design, synthesis, and optimization, including experience with peptide stability, delivery, and formulation challenges.
- Skills:
- Strong knowledge of peptide chemistry, including modification strategies to enhance therapeutic properties.
- Experience in peptide target selection, lead optimization, and structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and project management skills, with a track record of successfully leading drug discovery teams.
- Ability to drive innovative solutions for peptide therapeutic challenges and foster a culture of scientific excellence.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with peptide-based modalities such as cyclic peptides, stapled peptides, or peptide conjugates.
- Knowledge of disease areas such as oncology or metabolic disorders where peptide therapeutics play a key role.
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements for peptide-based drug development.
