An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented lawyer with a passion for privacy and compliance to join Rakuten Viki’s global legal team based in Singapore. Responsibilities will include: advising business units and stakeholders on legal and risk management issues associated with privacy and the use of personal data; supporting and administering the business’ privacy compliance program; working with internal/external counsel at a group level; implementation of corporate policies and procedures; and providing day-to-day support to the business on a breadth of compliance, privacy, and legal matters related to Rakuten Viki’s worldwide business operations. The role may also have a chance to work on other matters including drafting, reviewing and negotiating legal documentation and contracts (covering areas such as technology procurement, product development, advertising and marketing). This is an excellent opportunity for a person with a background in privacy related work to gain global experience in the burgeoning video streaming industry.

We seek a pro-active and decisive Associate Counsel, Legal, Risk & Compliance, who is resourceful, a strong team player, and possesses excellent organisational, interpersonal, and cross-cultural communication skills. The ability to work cross-functionally and effectively under pressure, and the willingness to learn, deal with ambiguity, and inform others, in a dynamic and fast-paced environment is essential.

Minimum requirements:

  • Law degre (LLB, JD or equivalent)
  • Minimum 2 to 3 years of relevant legal experience with strong foundations advising on and dealing with data protection and privacy regulations.
  • Qualified to practice law in Singapore and/or US (may consider other jurisdictions if strong experience)
  • Excellent communication, drafting and negotiation skills in English
  • Self-motivated, a high degree of independence, and have a desire and ability to pitch in, be challenged and think outside the box
  • Comfortable working with international teams, and across job functions and levels.
  • Good problem-solving skills (i.e. the ability to identify and consider critical key issues, and assess and articulate legal risks so the business can make informed commercial decisions)
  • The ability to strike the appropriate balance between risk, regulatory compliance and business needs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with GDPR and CCPA
  • IAPP/CIPP or other qualifications
  • Experience working with or in international media, technology or internet companies and familiarity with privacy and other legal issues relating to them
  • Experience with marketing legislation and principles
  • Transactional experience in the area of private consumer personal data
  • A commercially astute business-partner
  • Ability to translate complex legal concepts into clear and actionable guidance for non-legal teams
  • Strong project and people management skills, with the ability to build relationships and collaborate with multiple stakeholders to roll-out initiatives, close deals, and resolve issues
  • Understanding of digital security requirements
