The Centre for Environmental Sustainability (CfES) is currently looking for Research & Development Engineer/Scientist in Sustainable Material Technology (SMT) group.

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Lead projects (R&D and consultancy) to transform waste streams from batteries, & retail industries (textiles, furniture, and packaging) into valuable new products.

  • Involved in composite materials formulation, Polymerization, process optimization, surface functionalization/coating and testing.

  • Develop innovative and efficient recycling and upcycling technologies to minimize waste and promote a circular economy.

  • Conduct hands-on research to identify, evaluate, and develop in the areas of sustainable materials technologies and waste management ecosystems.

  • Engage with industry partners, especially local small and medium enterprises (SME) to provide sustainable solutions.

  • Lead in project management and execution, including presentations, technical reports, outcome documentation, and vendor/supplier procurement.

  • Provide mentorship to student interns and facilitate collaboration within the team and with industry partners.

[What we are looking for]

  • PhD or master’s degree in Material Science, Chemical Engineering or other related disciplines with at least 2 or more years of relevant work experience.

  • Strong analytical skills and experience operating equipment for composite materials characterization, including ICP, FTIR, TGA, BET, ICP, and tensile strength, ball mill machine, Gas chromatography etc.

  • Experience in research and development of sustainable materials technologies.

  • Strong understanding of recycling, upcycling, and waste minimization techniques.

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and project management skills.

  • Innovative mindset for the development of sustainable solutions.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong working relationships with industry partners.

  • Prior work experience in twin screw extruder, molding process, and prototype design would be an added advantage.

  • Candidates with more experience may be considered for a senior position.
